Gerritsen Beach finally has a skate park. It seemed like it took way too many years to be built, but nevertheless, it finally exists. The park is definitely not the greatest local skate park I have ever been to, and I’m sure that’s the case for many other riders and skaters who have skated it before. But the skate park has definitely made an impact on the neighborhood skate/bmx scenes. Ever since the the skate park has been around, the old “skate spot”, the park by PS 277, has been vacant, by riders and skaters of course. So if that was the city’s and the neighborhood’s plan to stop riders and skaters from “messing up” or “destroying” the park and other parts of the neighborhood by building this skatepark, I think it is a success. The skate park almost always has someone riding or skating in it. It is a major addtion to the neighborhood and has really seemed to become a rider’s/skater’s bonding place. The skatepark has brought many riders and skaters together, and groups or crews seem to have formed. These riders who rode together a few times at the skatepark have become closer friends and seem to have been riding/skating together at other spots. The skatepark in Gerritsen has definitely made an impact on riders and skaters from the neighborhood and even around the neighborhood.
